Africa’s biggest retirement fund administrator, Alexander Forbes, on Thursday became the 11th company to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) this year.The company’s return to the bourse’s main board followed its delisting in 2007, when it was bought by a private equity consortium for R8.2-billion.It listed with a market capitalisation of around R10.9-billion – putting it into the top 25% of companies listed on the JSE – and saw its stock jump by 14 percent to R8.55 a share by 9.15am.The listing was preceded by a R3.7-billion public offering last week – South Africa’s largest flotation in four years, according to news agency Reuters.“Investors were drawn by the regular income from its pension management and insurance businesses, and the potential for growth in sub-Saharan Africa, where financial services are still developing,” Reuters reported.The company is a leading employee benefits consulting, actuarial, investment and administration services provider and retirement fund administrator, with R275-billion in assets under administration as at the end of March this year.Alexander Forbes brings the number of financial services companies listed on the JSE to 28. “We are delighted to welcome Alexander Forbes back to the JSE, where it lists in the financial services sector, one of the most vibrant on the JSE,” JSE CEO Nicky Newton-King said in a statement.Statistics South Africa (SSA) estimates that the country’s financial services sector created 13 000 new jobs in the 2013/14 financial year, and currently employs over 1.8-million people.The JSE is Africa’s biggest bourse, and one of the top 20 exchanges in the world in terms of market capitalisation.SAinfo reporter
PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday declared in the State Legislative Assembly that a new policy would soon cap the number of casinos in a particular area, and that Goan residents would be banned from visiting the gaming areas.Giving an outline of his proposed casino policy, which will be finalised before the next session, Mr. Parrikar told the Assembly that all five offshore casinos currently operating in the Mandovi river would be forced to relocate to land over the next three years. He was replying to queries during a discussion on the 2017-18 State budget. “The Act will have a power to ensure that no Goan can visit casinos. The government will have powers to limit casinos in a particular area. The sixth casino will never enter Mandovi. We are capping it, under this Act, at five,” Mr. Parrikar said, during his nearly one-and-a-half-hour-long address in the ongoing monsoon session.Saying that a casino is as much a vice as liquor, Mr. Parrikar said he too was as opposed to the casino industry as the Opposition legislators, but was forced to allow them to operate because several stakeholders had invested money in vessels. He also blamed the Congress for “creating a fait accompli” on the issue. “We definitely opposed casinos. We also assured that we will cancel licences because that time there were no ships. When any person invests money, a State has a responsibility for continuity, right or wrong,” he said justifying continuation of offshore casinos by BJP governments over the years. He said the policy would ensure that the casinos would relocate from the river to an onshore “entertainment zone”.
Not just Uttar Pradesh, focus on capturing power in Delhi as well: this was the advice Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh gave to party workers and leaders as he entered the 81st year of his life on Thursday. While his public appearances have decreased over the past one year, party workers still look up to the Yadav patriarch as a guiding light and a potential prime ministerial candidate, especially as the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha election approaches.Mr. Singh has in the past made his PM aspirations known to all.“Yours eyes must be set on Delhi. Delhi is everything, keep that in mind… You must resolve to create such a situation that no government can be formed in Delhi without the SP,” Mr. Singh told a gathering at the party office on the occasion of his birthday.The SP founder even asked party workers to organise public meetings for him at the local level so that he could join in the campaign.Mr. Singh reflected on his career and how the SP formed the government in Uttar Pradesh four times and become part of the Centre twice, despite being underestimated as a “party of one district”.However, he said that “some leaders” broke away from the party after creating strife and causing damage, and now it was up to the youth to unite and strengthen the party ahead of 2019. Mr. Singh did not name any leader, though it could be speculated if he was referring to his younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav who, after a long family feud, especially with his nephew Akhilesh Yadav, formed a separate outfit recently. Akhilesh and Shivpal, however, have been locked in battle to claim Mulayam’s political legacy. Facebook Marketing Are audiences more interested in understanding what the big brands are doing? Do we look up to Coke and Pepsi and other great brands for inspiration?At HubSpot, we love to measure everything, and recently we completed a short study on how the use of brand names (including Coke, Pepsi, Dominos, Google, Pampers, Facebook,etc.) in article titles had an impact on blog article performance. The results were astounding. Out of the approximately 100 articles published over a period of 50 days, just over 20% of them had major brand names in the title. As you can see in the graph below, the articles that had a major brand name in the title generated 60% more page views on average than articles without them.Also, we published 6 articles with Google in the title, and on average they performed 50% better than articles without brand names in their titles.Surprisingly, while the use of brand names appeared to have an impact on page views and readership, it had little or no impact on comments (or conversation) and what appears to be a negative impact on inbound links. The brand name articles got 3 fewer inbound links on average than their counterparts. If you’re wondering why we used such a short time frame for the study, it’s because blog articles are like annuities. Over longer periods of time, articles continue to amass more and more page views, which would skew the study. The top-performing articles in all groups were spread pretty evenly across the time frame used for the study!Thoughts, Observations and TakeawaysTiming Your Article Publication is Key — There was definitely a “news” factor to articles with brand names in their titles, and the timeliness of the publication coincided with the conversation about the brand on the Internet and in media. (e.g. the Dominos and Pepsi articles).Visible Brands Serve as Case Studies — People and marketers in general love hearing what major brands are doing and how they are conducting their business. A lot of companies like to emulate and learn from big brands. Familiarity Has an Impact on Viral Effect — People become bigger “sneezers” (per Seth Godin’s idea virus) when it comes to bigger brands because they are more familiar with them and their products. Heck, I’ve even said it before:Marketing isn’t arts and crafts.In today’s data-driven, closed-loop world where we track, measure, and analyze every little detail, the phrase above seems to make a lot of sense. To be effective marketers, we need to put childish things aside. We can’t simply create super-cool content and other marketing materials for the sheer fun of it; we need to create with a purpose. And we need to be able to tie whatever we create to something quantifiable.Ultimately, the modern marketing department is focused on hitting specific, number-oriented goals: X many leads. X many sales-qualified leads. X% lead-to-customer conversion rate.There’s seemingly nothing aesthetic or artistic or “arts-n’-craftsy” about it.But, in fact, there is.The Art of MarketingWe can use the science-side of marketing to figure out who we should create content for, as well as to figure out what that content should be. Through A/B testing and optimizing, we can even figure out when the best times are to share our content with people via social media and email. And, of course, using analytics software, we can determine if the content we create ends up delivering on our underlying why, or goal (e.g. lead generation, lead conversion, etc.).There’s only one piece missing from this marketing puzzle, and I assure you, it’s a crucial one: the how.How do marketers actually create all that content? How do they organize the information? How do they decide on font sizes and color schemes? How do they figure out what to put in the cover image or other promotional images? How do they decide when (or when not to) use gradients or drop shadows or 3D bevel effects?This, my friends, is where art comes into play. While science can inform us at every step along the way, it can’t actually do the work for us. At some point, we need to roll up our sleeves and create something.At some point, we need to do some arts and crafts.So I implore you, for the sake of your mental health, to take off your data geek/growth hacker hat for just a little while so you can explore some of the “arts-n’-craftsy” marketing projects below. 1) Create an Animated GIFThere’s something very satisfying about seeing an original animated GIF come to life. Once you get comfortable removing existing backgrounds from employee headshots, start dragging and dropping those headshots onto some new, snazzy backgrounds. Here are some examples below that I created using photos of my colleague Tyler (left) and his cat, Big Jim (right).
