Bengals medical aspirants may soon get wish of better exam syllabus fulfilled

first_imgKolkata: The long-standing demand of medical aspirants from Bengal to frame a more scientific and logical syllabus of the national medical entrance examination may soon be addressed, as the Prime Minister’s office has urged the Union Human Resources Development Ministry to consider the demand.The development has taken place after a group of doctors and some medical students jointly wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, mentioning the necessity of changing the existing syllabus of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which the doctors viewed as ‘irrational’ and ‘unscientific’. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeNEET is the national level medical entrance examination conducted throughout the country for selecting medical students.The doctors also pointed out that the Centre must introduce a more scientific examination like the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in more advanced countries, where the candidates would be judged on the basis of the topics that are related to the undergraduate medical courses.MCAT is a medical entrance examination for prospective medical students in the United States, Australia and Canada. These countries emphasise on medical-related topics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, said the doctors in their letter to the PM. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedDr A K Maity, one of the members of the group that had sought the PM’s intervention in this regard, said that there is no need to read plant physiology, morphology, anatomy, plant reproduction, classification of plants in Botany.The medical aspirants should know general Biology, Genetics, Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Applied Physiology etc.Due to the insufficient basic knowledge relating to the subjects that are required, the overall standard of the MBBS doctors are degrading gradually and this will have a long term effect on the healthcare system of our country, Dr Maity said.According to the doctors, the MCAT syllabus is logical as stress has been given on Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, General Biology, Medical Zoology and organic and inorganic Chemistry.last_img
